Accessibility of STM Buses Neglected: Freedom, Security and Dignity of People with Disabilities Jeopardized

RAPLIQ denounces the obstacles limiting the rights of people with disabilities to access Société de Transport de Montréal buses. Today, August 22, 2011, people using wheelchairs or electric scooters will assess the accessibility of buses on a dozen bus routes. The media are invited to join with participants and live this experience.

Given the inaccessibility of the Montréal metro, buses are the only regular mode of public transportation that offers a certain level of accessibility. However, even though the majority of buses are equipped with ramps, in reality, often people using mobility aids are denied access. Non-functional ramps, as well as negative and discriminatory attitudes from drivers do exist.

RAPLIQ will participate in the City Council to denounce this situation and share the results of the day. RAPLIQ will also remind people that Canada ratified the Convention on the rights of people with disabilities in 2010. The accessibility of public buses is a recognized right and is already a reality in many large cities.
